About the property:

Our Red Angus herd was established in 1997 with the purchase of 60 cows PTIC from Mrs Fairley’s herd at Apollo Bay over looking Bass Straight.  These cows calved to Red Angus bulls initially and then to our Gelbvieh bulls to breed The Balancer cattle and Composites.  We were so impressed by these cows we purchased a further 50 cows two years later and they became the foundations of our commercial Red Angus herd.

Our move into registered Red Angus came from the purchase of Canadian embryos and semen and also from purchasing females from Warwick Tom at the 2003 National Sale at Dubbo.  We bought Te Mania Parcel P41 a magnificent red sire who continues to influence our herd today.  Anama Chiefton Trent T19 was our next sire and proved to be well worth the trip to SA to find him.  Both of these sires were used in the commercial herd for a number of years and left a foundation of great milking, easy doing and highly productive females.

Although we have won numerous Champion Steer and Carcase awards with our Gelbvieh and Balancer steers the crossing of T19 over the P41 daughters proved to work well with this combination producing four Grand Champions which is very hard for a straight British steer to do when competing against Euro and Euro cross cattle. The heifer portion of the draft proved to be very fertile and milky with great constitution and consistently weaned our heaviest calves.

The Ebony Lodge stud program has moved along slowly until recently when we decided to purchase some new genetics from Canada.  These are from some of the leading females in the Red Six Mile herd who are regarded as the benchmark in Red Angus in Canada.  They were implanted in the Spring 2008 and are due in August 2009.  We are very excited by the prospects of these new genetics and look forward to being able to share the genetics with our many friends.

Purchasing semen from breed leading sires has seen a move into some really powerful bulls like Fully Loaded and Sakic just two of the super sires being used at the Red Six Mile stud.  Holden Hi Ho and Leachman Grand Canyon from the USA have also contributed to some really productive females that continue to amaze us with their feed efficiency and incredible weaning ratios.  Rancher, Mr Leader and  Red Knight have also been used along with SSS Boomer all outstanding proven sires from Canada.

The purchase of the grand old matron Red Wing R4 sold us totally on the virtues of the breed.  She was the complete female with faultless structure, and ample milk all in a quality package.  Weighing in at 650 kgs she consistently weaned the heaviest calf every year.  Red Wing was successfully flushed to Barney, Marias and Grand Canyon leaving a legacy of quality daughters in our herd and numerous sons sold to commercial cattlemen looking for some real performance cattle.

Our latest venture is the purchase of the sensational Red Angus sire Te Mania Viceroy Z1032.  Semen in this sire has been sold to the USA, CAN, South Africa and Brazil.  We have seen calves by him in other herds and believe he will work extremely well for us.  His first calves are due in the spring of 2009.
