BIOGRAPHY

Starting of with 120 acres seventeen years ago after making a lifestyle change. Our aim was to make our small farm profitable, after many lengthy discussions and lots of research we chose Highland cattle over more mainstream breeds. We saw the niche side of the Highland cattle being our cash cow.

Our move to our Red Angus came in 1999 when we purchased our first animals. We chose Red Angus over the other more mainstream breed as their temperament; calving ease and color complemented our Highlands.

Weimaraners have always played a big part of our lives with our biggest thrill being given at the Weimaraner Nationals in 2005 were our home bred boy Silverodhar Boy NDoubt was awarded best dog in show over 234 other weimaraners. This award is really an honor as the show is only held once every five years and every dog is graded by the judge who is from overseas. Our approach to raising beef cattle may be different to conventional farmers but we must be doing something right as we now have over 80 loyal clients and the numbers seem to e growing. Additional sales are gained from the hides and horns plus by showcasing our product at numerous expos and shows, sales of live animals to other breeders and the home freezer trade of our quality home grown grass fed Highland & Red Angus Beef also help to grow our business. Our cattle numbers have grown and the farm size has doubled and we are now looking to expand again.

Our Property

Claremont Red Angus and Highland Cattle is situated at 125 Mckinleys Road Clunes Victoria on 105ha.Our average rainfall is 600mm on which we run 30 Red Angus cows and 30 Highland cows with around 120 head being carried through out the year. Calving is planned so we have animals ready to finish, continuously throughout the year. We aim to finish 20 Highland steers and 10-20 Red Angus steers a year for the home freezer trade we also value add by selling the tanned Highland Hides.

About the herd:

Selection criteria for cattle

Claremont Red Angus & Scottish highland cattle are bred for both the stud and commercial beef operation. We aim to breed high performing easy care bulls with strong constitution and structure that are suitable for Australian conditions. Our aim is to produce feminine females with high growth, temperament, structural soundness, calving ease that still continue to produce beef and fatten well on pasture. Stud Stock is entered at Royal and Country shows. Only the superior heifers and bulls are retained for sale and are available for your inspection.

Selection criteria for cattle to be killed

Our target weight for our steers and heifers is 400kg which is usually about 12-14 months for our Red Angus and 18-20months for our Highlands. Weather plays a major factor in finishing our livestock the Highlands are finished between June and August for the ultimate hide and the Red Angus are finished through out the warmer months.

Red Angus & Highland Beef

Red Angus and Scottish Highland Cattle are renowned for producing high quality beef with excellent flavor and tenderness. We achieved this by raising, handling and feeding our cattle in a natural and humane manner. Claremont premium home grown grass feed beef is a healthy alternative to commercially available beef products. Our beef, although not certified organic is as naturally raised as we can possibly get it.

In order to finish our cattle they are fed a diet of quality pasture hay, oaten hay and silage. No growth hormones are used although they are routinely wormed and vaccinated. At Claremont we try to grow our own fodder to ensure that our quality requirements are met. Consistent growth rates are our primary goal when producing beef with maximum flavor and exceptional eating quality.

Processing

Our steers are weighed and visually assessed for fat coverage. Suitable steers are then loaded as late as possible and taken over to the Kyneton abattoirs by Jeff. They are processed first thing in the morning. The carcase is hung for five days then sent on to our butcher where it is hung for another three days.

The carcases are then cut up and packed by our butcher for each customer’s requirements. We cater for various family sizes and our beef is packed into labeled freezer bags. This ensures our clients can find a particular cut. Our meat is delivered chilled in our own refrigerated vehicle to the client’s door.

Our Beef sales are by word of mouth, which we find by far the best form of advertising and marketing .We regularly attend field days and farm Expos with our livestock which allows us the opportunity to talk to potential and existing customers. Our membership with associated cattle societies also gives us anther avenue to market our product.

We regularly phone our clients to ensure they are happy with their purchases and to see when they will need their next delivery .This enables us to plan our future meat supply requirements.
